CIRF Film series - Wesley Willis's 'Joyrides'

That's right. You heard me. Another film. And the best part - IT'S FREE!

This time, the film is the award winning documentary about Wesley Willis's life, called 'Joyrides.'

Synopsis from the film's website:

"A portrait of the self proclaimed rock ‘n’ roll star and “Chicago City Artist”, Wesley Willis.

Despite impossible odds, Chicago native, Wesley Willis became an underground rock icon, revered artist and hero to many before his untimely death in 2003. Through his force of personality and his artistic talents, Wesley’s music and art attracted people from all walks of life. This film follows the prolific artist on his journey from obscurity to fame."

WHAT: Wesley Willis's 'Joyrides'
WHEN: Sunday, December 6, 2009 @ 6:30 PM
WHERE: The Empty Bottle
HOW MUCH: Just the cost of the boozahol you ingest

If you have not heard of Wesley Willis, I urge you to check him out. His music is unconventional, but it has certainly impacted the lives of thousands who have met, seen, or listened to the man. Willis spent many years living on the streets of Chicago, peddling his ballpoint pen drawings, and was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. Before his untimely demise, he recorded over 20 albums with his Technics KN-2000 synthesizer, which include tracks like "Rock and Roll McDonalds", "Birdman Kicked My Ass", "Pee Shy" and "Suck a Cheetah's Dick", ending many tracks with a slogan for some product such as "Wheaties, the breakfast of champions" or "Taco Bell, run for the border." Willis's story is inspirational, and 'Joyrides' shows that you too can be something if you put your mind to it.

A note on the meetup:
While I do not expect the Empty Bottle to be terribly busy, if you are new to the group or are having trouble finding us, please look around a bit more. We try to stand in an obvious spot and have good sized signs, but sometimes the signs get blocked by people standing in front of them, but I promise I'll try my best to keep the sign visible and I'll keep my eye out for any RSVPer's.

A note on RSVPing:
Please, if you RSVP 'yes' but don't think you are going to make it to the show or aren't going to actually meet up with the group, then please adjust your RSVP accordingly. The organizers appreciate it because we will know who to look out for and we can focus on other aspects of organizing instead of looking around all night for no-shows. Plus, we can enjoy the show more without worrying about people not being able to find us. Thanks!

Joyrides was entertaining, uplifting and emotional, a great film about a unique musician.
    •  sooooo funny! so sad ; ( great documentary about wesley willis. great chance to catch up with the meetup folks, too.
    • Sticky Fingers
Actually not a bad place to see a movie. Except for the standing part... The movie was very insightful. Being only a teenager when the Wesley Willis Fiasco reached the zenith of its popularity, I knew next to nothing about the man behind the rock star. Enjoyed myself and liking the indie music movie nights a lot :)
