Norway. When one thinks of this bone-chilling European country, what comes to mind? Fjords? Vikings? Bad 70's teeny-bopper pop (Leif Garrett)? IKEA? Oh sorry, that's the country next door...
Little do folks know though that Sweden's cousins to the left have quietly borne a number of talented musical artists in recent years - particularly in the electronic genre (Royksopp, Lindstrom).
Included in this mix: Bergen's Datarock. Spearheaded by the charismatic Fredrik Saroea with some pals in 2000, Datarock started as a high energy quartet that could be more or less described as Electro Punk Dance Rock. Their "EPDR" sound was unleashed on 2005's fab debut LP Datarock Datarock. From the geeky, Devo-inspired "Computer Camp Love" to the bouncy, slithery rhythms of "I Used to Dance With My Daddy" to the irresistible disco punk anthem of "Fa-Fa-Fa", Datarock Datarock scored a respectable 7.8 rating from hard-ass critics Pitchfork. Clad in their traditional red Adidas jumpsuits and shades, Datarock's jams and let-it-loose live performances have slowly built a small but passionate following right here in the U S of A.
Today Datarock consists of just Saroea and Ketil Mosnes, but they've returned in a big way with the LP Red this past Spring. Red brings more of the same sound, but shamelessly flaunts more of their influences - check out the catchy "True Stories", a song almost completely made up of Talking Heads song titles.
I've seen this lot live just once and I can tell you that they put on a damned entertaining show. So if you're interested in giving these lads a go and not worried about shakin' a lil' boo-tay on a Friday night, come on down with us to the Door and check out Norway's Datarock!
Tickets are $15. Get tickets thru Ticketmaster (ugh) here for $15 + fees. You can also get them at the DD Box office for just $17 total ($15 for tik + $2 facility fee). Don't wait too long though, my gut tells me that this show will eventually sell out.
Meetup Details:
We'll meet at Pint (1547 N. Milwaukee Ave) at 8:30pm. Esser opens the show at 9pm. Look for the CIRF table signs.
"Originality, nostalgia, sincerity, camp ? none of these are stable elements in Datarock?s world, which may explain why ?Red? comes across as well as it does," says today's NYTimes rave. Count me in!
Connie & whoever else missed us at Pint: Apologies for you not seeing us. We were there from 8:30-9:45p at a table near the entrance by the window with the tabletop sign. Please understand that sometimes in larger places like this on a Fri night it can be difficult to ID people and be seen - we try to display the sign(s) as visible as we can, but occasionally people will miss us. We'll continue to work on being more visible at the meetups though, hope to see u at the next show.
Tickmaster BAD - so your tickmaster purchase will run you $26.50 -- I encourage you to get them at the DD Box office. There is a $5.00 "convenience" fee and then $6.50 for them to put a stamp on it.
