Bottom Lounge (map)

Selected By: Jess R

Shonen Knife at Bottom Lounge.
Tickets $15+ $2.75 fees. Buy them here
Show starts at 8pm, expect headliner on around 11pm or later.

Meet at 8:30 pm in the Bottom Lounge bar. I'll have a Chicago Indie Rock Fans (CIRF) tabletop sign, white letters on a blue, green and red striped background. If you plan to arrive late or will be watching an opening band at 8pm and still plan to meet up with the group, please let me know to look for you! I'll wait out in the bar until The Dials are on at approximately 9pm--if the lineup is as listed on the Bottom Lounge website.

About Shonen Knife:
This is a great show for anyone interested in historic indie rock bands. Shonen Knife formed in 1981 (yeah, that's right, 1981!) in Japan. The band lineup has changed over the years, but the influences of girl-pop and punk in their music has remained constant. The band is currently touring behind its most recent album, Supergroup. If you like infectious Japanese girl-punk, this is a show for you!
Albums are available on iTunes and eMusic.

About the opening bands, which are apparently all from Chicago:
The Alright Alreadies: Are a true punk band (no real pop here).
The Alright Alreadies Myspace
The Dials: Its a good night for infectious girl-pop/garage with the Dials in addition to Shonen Knife.
The Dials Myspace
White Mystery: self-described as psychedelic rock. But I think more garage rock.

I decided last night that I really dislike Bottom Lounge. The sound is TERRIBLE when the venue isn't packed. And last night it was pretty empty. Which is sad, given that Shonen Knife has such a long history. They didn't go on until after 11pm on a Tuesday though, so that might have turned away their original fanbase. I had fun, but was surprised that after 20 years the band didn't sound any more polished than they did 20 years ago (a true '80s punk band I guess). Overall, enjoyable experience but more so hanging out with the other Meetup-ers than seeing the band. Oh well, you never know!
