Raise High the Roof Beam @ Schubas

Schubas Tavern (map)

Selected By: Jess R

Another awesome Chicago Indie Rock/Folk/Pop band! Let's check out the musical stylings of Raise High the Roof Beam at Schubas on a glorious winter Thursday night. Tickets are only $7 (+ $2 fees online) for tonight's show. Get them here.

Meet in the Schubas bar at 9pm. First band on around 9:30pm. I will try to snag a table to put a Chicago Indie Rock Fans sign on (red, green and blue stripes with white letters).

Don't be shy, I'll probably be the only person in the bar sitting alone and reading a book until you show up! **Please, please only RSVP "yes" if you'll be showing up and meeting me. No one likes being stood up...

About the Bands:
Raise High the Roof Beam:
Whether this was intentional or not we may never know, but Raise High the Roof Beam happens to be part of the title to a J.D. Salinger novella. Don't let that turn you off though, the music is in no way pretentious. Full of harmonizing, clever lyrics and catchy hooks, I think this band will be a pleasure live. According to their MySpace, someone at a show once referred to their music as "The Arcade Fire meets The Muppets." I for one love both! Take a listen.
They have an CD for purchase on Bandcamp called "The Majestic Beast of the Flatlands". Their earlier EP, "The Buildup", is available on iTunes and Amazon.

Gentleman Auction House:

Hailing from St. Louis, Gentleman Auction House calls themselves an Indie Pop band. The first song I listened to on their Myspace was a Christmas-themed song. Intriguing... Again, their music is heavy on the harmonizing but possibly a bit too much "rock" for my tastes. I have been proven wrong in the past and loved a live set while still not liking an album. Listen and judge for yourself.

Old Stable Hands:
Another Chicago newbie band! Unfortunately, Myspace is not letting me play any songs at the moment so I have no idea what they sound like. Listen to Old Stable Hands.

This was one of the best groups I have ever had the pleasure of hosting a Meetup for!! Lots of new, friendly, interesting peeps with great taste and lots of music knowledge. They totally held it together when I was late and managed to find each other before I got there. The band was good too. Would be interested in following their career. Felt "Muppets meets Arcade Fire" was a very appropriate description. The drummer reminded us a bit of Animal. All around great time!

Fun local band and about ten new members - awesome group of people. I had a blast!

It was great meeting everyone and the band sounded good!

They were definitely worth the $9 to watch. They had some catchy songs and I'm always partial to harmonies, especially when they're boy/girl.
