Announcing a new Meetup for Chicago Indie Rock Fans!

What: Quasi @ Lincoln Hall w/ Let's Wrestle

When: Saturday, May 1, 2010 9:00 PM

Where:
Lincoln Station
2432 N Lincoln Ave
Chicago, IL 60614
[masked]

It's a long time coming, but for the first time since 2003, Quasi has embarked on a US national tour, supporting their first studio release on Kill Rock Stars entitled American Gong. They'll be playing here in Chicago at Lincoln Hall on May 1 with Let's Wrestle. If you've never heard this indie-pop trio before, give them a listen.

Quasi has been around since 1993, founded by ex-husband and wife Sam Coomes and Janet Weiss. Weiss, you may know as the drummer for the late Sleater-Kinney, who now works with Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks, while Coomes's history lies with The Donner Party and Heatmiser, and they've both worked on numerous projects with other big name indie acts. In 2007, Joanna Bolme, also of The Jicks, permanently joined the band.

Quasi's sound, while musically poppy, sometimes borders dark and cynical lyrically. The band heavily uses the rocksichord, an keyboard-synthesizer thing that simulates the sound of harpsichord. Think moog designed for a ren faire, and if you don't get that reference, just go with me...you'll like it. Check out "It's Raining" from The Sword of God and "The Poisoned Well" from Featuring "Birds". Their newest album, American Gong, released just a few weeks ago, is described as "both a summation of its career and an accessible introduction for new listeners." It's simplistically heavy riffs, transcendent drumming, and engaging melody and lyrics will translate well onto the stage for what will sure to be an excellent performance.

A note on the meetup:
We will be meeting at Lincoln Station at 9:00 PM before the show. This will give us some time to hang out, grab a few beers, get to know each other before the show starts, where it will get loud and socializing will be difficult. If you won't be able to make it to the pre-meetup, send me an email and we can arrange something to meet up at the show. If you are new to the group or are having trouble finding us, please look around a bit more. While we try to stand in an obvious spot and have good sized signes, sometimes the signs get blocked by people standing in front of them. I'll try to keep the sign as visible as possible and keep my eye out for any RSVP'ers.

A note on RSVPing:
Please, if you RSVP 'yes' but don't think you are going to make it to the show or aren't going to actually meet up with the group, then please adjust your RSVP accordingly. The organizers appreciate it because we will know who to look out for and we can focus on other aspects of organizing instead of looking around all night for no-shows. Plus, we can enjoy the show more without worrying about people not being able to find us. Thanks!
