Hey ... I was wondering if anyone would be willing to suggest radio they listen to for discovering new music? Over-the-air or internet-streamed recommendations are all appreciated!

I sometimes find new music on WONC, which is a college radio station broadcast from North Central College in Naperville. No commercials. Music can be hit or miss depending on the DJ (and sometimes the DJ's suck), but there are also moments of true greatness, where I'll hear four or five really cool songs in a row that I haven't heard before. Another cool thing is I can call there phone number or IM them (AOL: fm89) and the DJ almost always answers. This way, I can easily get a band name if it isn't announced over the air. They're at 89.1, but seem to have a weak signal. But they also stream at http://www.wonc.org... .

Thanks, Bill

here are my local favorites:
www.wnur.org (89.3 northwestern)
www.wluw.org (88.7 loyola)

somafm.com is great, too. their "indie pop rocks" channel pretty much rules.

wluw is the best.
However, it will only be on the air for another few months. Loyola University (who own the station & have leased it out for the last 5 years) has decided to take it back for their communications school. I hope they end up with some similar programing as far as the music is concerned.

You may not be able to get it if you are far enough out to get Naperville radio, but you should listen to it whenever you are closer to the city.

The only stations I hear new music on are online. I just started listening to Somafm Indie Pop Rocks so that's good suggestion. I also like 100hitz on Windows Radio
http://www.100hitz.co...

I usually just stream a playlist that I make on playlist.com
http://www.projectpla...

Whenever I hear something I like I usually look for it on playlist.com & put it on my playlist to stream at work.

Good luck!

I too am a loyal indie pop rocks fan on Somafm.com-- Elise Nordling is an awesome programmer who has introduced me to lots of great indie rock, they are commecial free and listener supported, and are always in need of donations! She plays lots of groups that come up on this Meetup's radar. Craig

Perhaps one of the best for cutting edge/new music is KEXP out of Seattle. The station is the sponsor for the Pitchfork Music Festival this year and most likely from now on.

KCRW out of Santa Monica and WFUV in NYC are also great.

WLUW is always a good choice and you better get your share now because there is a strong possibility the music format will be changing quite dramatically in the near future.

Finally as a shameless plug...you can hear cutting edge music from around the world- I disdain the 'world music' phrase- on my show Radio M Friday nights 9-11 on WBEZ 91.5 FM. You can also catch previous shows, recordings of bands here in Chicago including Beirut, Yeasayer and Gruff Rhys and playlists at myspace.com/radiom

They have a podcast - KEXP Song of the Day - I got it from itunes, but you can probably get it from their website.

Hi there,
I'm an expat Kiwi living in Chicago, and by and large (there are always exceptions!) I still get the majority of my new UK and US music from student/indie radio back home:

http://www.95bfm.co.n... (where I did shows for a decade)
http://www.fleetfm.co... (where I do shows when visiting)

Both of these stream and have diverse shows depending whom you get and when!
Cheers,
Owen

Just to reiterate the rationale for our group's love for indie pop rocks! at somafm.com, take a gander at this playlist and tell me you couldn't just faint from happiness at listening to this music! Craig (sorry for such a long post)

Hey everybody ... thanks for responding. This is turning into a great list of links.

I was reading an album review on amazon.com, and this station was mentioned. I've checked it out a little bit and thought it was also worth mentioning.
